  • To begin, click on the "Advanced" under the search box.
  • Next, in the first row under "Builder," click on the pull-down menu under "All Fields" and select "Journal."
  • Then paste the following string to the entry box on the right column:

  • In the second row, click on the pull-down menu under "All Fields" and select "Abstract."
  • Then enter search terms for your research question. Put parentheses around terms for the same concept, ORs between terms for the same concept, and ANDs between concepts, as in the following example:

    ("processed food*" OR "trans fat*" OR "saturated fat*") AND (child* OR youth OR teen* OR adolescen* OR school*)
     
  • [Note: the words AND and OR must be CAPITALIZED in this database]
  • Click on the Search button or press Enter.
  • On the left side of the result screen, under "Publication date" select "10 years."
  • If your search does not find any or enough articles, try broadening your topic.
  • Criteria for selecting the articles:
    • Original research only, indicated by a format that includes an introduction, methodology, results, and conclusion.
    • Human subjects only. No animal studies or reviews of literature.
    • Each research article must have at least 100 human test subjects being studied to be statistically valid.
    • Note that the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Journal of the American Dietetic Association are the same publication with a title change. So you can only use a total of two articles from these two journals; i.e., either one from each or two from one of them.
  • To keep a record of articles you want to display again at a later time, you can do one of the following:
    • Save a PDF copy of the article by clicking on the PDF link under "Formats," then save the PDF file on your USB drive or your computer.
    • Or, send the citation and link of the article to yourself:
      • go back to the results page, and click the check boxes at the left of the citation for each article you want.
      • Then click the “Send to:” at the top right of the results list. In the dialog box that opens, select the “E-mail” radio button, enter your email address in the E-mail box and click the “E-mail” button at the bottom of the dialog box.
